Apple makes dating and AI companion apps 18+: what app founders should do before January 12

Short answer: On November 2, 2026, Apple announced that from November 16, 2026 the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire adds two new declarations: Shared Location and Dating and Relationships. Dating and Relationships covers dating or relationship connections between real people and virtual companions that engage users in sexual or romantic content, and any app that declares it gets a minimum 18+ rating. You answer the questions with your next update or questionnaire change, and every app must have them completed by January 12, 2027 (Apple Developer News, MacRumors). For founders of dating, social and AI companion apps: check whether your app crosses the line, decide on purpose, and answer it before the deadline, not in the last week.
If your app has a romance mode, a "girlfriend" persona or a matching screen anywhere inside it, Apple just put an 18+ sticker on it. You have until January 12, 2027 to say so yourself. If you plan to sell your app, the buyer will check this answer.
The 30-second version

What exactly changed
Apple's notice adds two content descriptors to the age rating questionnaire (Apple Developer News):
- Shared Location: sharing a real-world location with another person or group.
- Dating and Relationships: features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people, and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.
Apps that include Dating and Relationships get a minimum rating of 18+. For Shared Location, Apple says the minimum rating may not change in some regions. In Brazil, local rules require A16 for Shared Location and A18 for Dating and Relationships. Apps that may qualify for a lower rating there, like a parent-and-child location app, can request an official rating from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MacRumors, gov.br). AppleInsider frames it as Apple keeping up with a wave of age-gating rules around the world (AppleInsider).
What founders are saying
So far the coverage only quotes Apple. We haven't found a dating or AI companion founder on the record about this yet, so we won't invent a quote. Here is how it looks from our side of the table, as people who buy apps.
The line nobody drew for you: "companion" vs "chat"
Dating apps already knew they were adults-only. The real news is the second half of the sentence: a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content. That pulls in a whole category of AI apps that grew by keeping the romance vague: "AI friend", "AI character chat", roleplay apps with a flirty default persona. If romance is a feature you sell, it's now a declared, 18+ feature. If it's something users can switch on after review, read it together with Apple's rule against apps that change after approval (our breakdown of rule 2.5.19). A wrong answer here isn't a rating problem anymore, it's a review and account risk.
What it means for you, founder by founder
What changes: probably nothing in practice. You most likely already ran 18+ and age checks.
Should you act? yes, but it's a 10-minute job: answer the new question with your next update.
What I'd do: also answer Shared Location honestly if you show distance or live location, and check your Brazil listing, where both rules apply (A16 and A18).
What changes: if your companion does romance, you're 18+, the same as Tinder.
Should you act? yes, this is the decision of your year.
What I'd do: pick one road on purpose. Either own 18+ (age-gate onboarding, price for adults, stop buying ads aimed at teens), or remove romance from the product and the ads and stay all-ages. The worst place to be is in between: a "friend" app that is romantic in practice and declared as neither.
What changes: one more declaration. Apple says your minimum rating may not change in some regions, but in Brazil it's A16.
Should you act? yes: answer it, and if you're a parent-child safety app, look at requesting a lower official rating in Brazil.
What I'd do: treat Brazil as its own case and check your rating there after November 16.
What changes: buyers now get a clean yes or no on two risky features, right in App Store Connect.
Should you act? yes: answer before you start a sale, not during due diligence.
What I'd do: when we look at an app, the age rating and the questionnaire answers are on our checklist, because a wrong one means a rejected update or a removed app after closing. The answer itself doesn't scare us. Not knowing which audience you sell to, and how much of your revenue depends on it, does. That's what moves the price. See what moves a subscription app's multiple.
The buyer's math (one illustration)
A hypothetical example, not a prediction: an AI companion app makes $40K a month in profit and, by its own analytics, 15% of paying users are under 18. If the app goes 18+ and loses that slice, that's about $6K a month, or $72K a year. At a 3x profit multiple, that's about $216K of value. The bigger hit is uncertainty: if the founder doesn't know the share, a buyer will assume the worst case and put it in the offer. Measure your age mix before November 16, so you can show the real number and not a guess.
Your checklist
- List every feature that matches the two definitions: matching, romance or flirting with an AI persona, and live location sharing.
- Decide on purpose: own 18+, or remove the romance from the product and the marketing.
- From November 16, answer both questions with your next update. Don't wait for January.
- If you go 18+: age-gate onboarding and move your ad targeting to adults.
- Check Brazil separately (A16 location, A18 dating).
- Selling soon? Check what your app is worth with your real audience mix, before a buyer does it for you.

FAQ
What are Apple's new age rating declarations?
From November 16, 2026, the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire asks whether your app includes Shared Location (sharing real-world location with another person or group) and Dating and Relationships (dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content).
Do AI companion apps have to be rated 18+?
If the virtual companion engages users in sexual or romantic content, yes. Apple says apps that include Dating and Relationships receive a minimum age rating of 18+, whether the connection is with real people or a virtual companion.
What is the deadline?
You provide the declarations when you submit an app update or change your age rating questionnaire, and all apps must have them completed by January 12, 2027.
Does location sharing make my app 18+?
No. Apple says Shared Location may not change the minimum age rating in some regions. In Brazil, local rules require an A16 rating for Shared Location, and apps that may qualify for a lower rating can request one from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Does an 18+ rating lower my app's value?
Not by itself. Buyers price the revenue you keep and the risk they take on. If part of your paying users are under 18 and you lose them, that revenue comes out of the valuation, and if you don't know the share, buyers will assume the worst case.
